I’ve heard corporate leaders say it. I’ve heard my business clients and weight loss clients say the same phrase. Sometimes I don’t even hear it but I know the belief is there. Ready for it?
“Failure is not an option”
Oh boy.. it makes me shudder.
1) Failure IS an option, and often times it’s a damn good one.
Your biggest tank – whether in business or weight loss – may be the very thing that shows you the root cause of what’s not working. When you make this discovery then you can pivot and turn in a direction that works for you.
When I quit my job without anything lined up because I “couldn’t take it any longer” I felt like a failure. I thank my lucky stars every day for that “failure” because I wouldn’t have learned how to listen to my inner knowing in the same way otherwise.
2) Believing that failure is not an option is a productivity, problem solving and innovation killer.
Do you feel energized and excited when you think of avoiding failure? I don’t. I feel stressed!
When I operate from a place of fear or avoidance my brain goes into fight-or-flight mode and the stress hormones start flowing. At the same time, my ability to work “in the flow” and be at my creative peak is shot.
When you stand in a place of accepting all possibilities – even what you are defining as failure - then you invite courage, possibility, innovation and a bit more risk to show up. That’s where the real magic happens.
Going after your goal with gusto knowing that you just might fail makes you more courageous and actually more likely to succeed.
Don’t get stuck in the trap of believing that failure is anything but feedback.
What would it be like if instead of “failure is not an option” you said:
This is what I want and I’m going after it. My goal may turn out differently than I hope and if it does that’s okay. Regardless of the outcome I will be open to feedback and learning. Going forward knowing that failure is an option allows me to be bold and more courageous. What I can do in that space is revolutionary.
