When things go sideways....

Ever feel like you’re making progress toward your dreams and then it all goes sideways

Trust me, you’re not alone!

I have this client, Meghan, who was feeling like everything she wanted was becoming reality.

She was creating the business growth she wanted, she was making health gains, she focused her thoughts, surmounting obstacles, and it all appeared to be going smoothly.

But then, her husband’s work unexpectedly changed, which (long story short) had a domino effect on her work, family life, and her capacity. She went from saying “yay!” to saying “ugh” with so much frustration.

It happens to all of us, right?

It could be an illness, taking care of a loved one, or maybe a setback like negative feedback or a major contract falling through. But then, our minds have been shaped by a lifetime of experiences, making it easy to slip back into the habit of obsessively searching for worst-case scenarios or DOOM.

Or worse, we may succumb to crushing self-doubt, questioning why we're even pursuing our dreams. It's easy to think, "How can I possibly achieve this while living a normal life?"

The truth is, life will always deliver surprises, and reverting to old mental patterns is the common path.

But there is one little phrase that can help steer you back to confidence, ease, and empowerment when life feels sideways:

This is happening FOR ME, not to me.

Embarking on the journey to make your dreams a reality is not about trying to sidestep life's challenges or avoiding setbacks. It's about recognizing that things will go awry, and understanding that you possess the inner wisdom to navigate through it all.

If you find yourself caught up in the hustle again, pause for a moment and ask yourself, “What if this is happening FOR ME, not to me?”

What do you notice then?

How does your focus change?

Whether it's about money, business growth, a career change, or a new relationship – we cannot possibly conceive every way in which things can work out FOR US.

Sometimes, we can only connect the dots of how this unwelcome thing was actually perfect for us when we look back on it. Don’t wait to look back. Access that wisdom NOW.

Meghan did this and realized that she was on the verge of working more than she really wanted, and she opened herself to new possibilities of how she could balance work and family life.

Life might be going sideways, but there is always the invitation that it’s happening FOR YOU, not to you.

XO,

Sarah

PS: Coaches! Sometimes it’s SO hard to see how something that went “wrong” with a client or in our business is working for us. That's one of the reasons why I created my Fireside Mentorship for Coaches. But wait, there's more!
